Meltdown
September 24, 2008 Jesus Manifesto has posted "The Death of Evelyn and the Failure of the Church." Definitely worth reading.
My first reaction is simply to say that I can't write that kind of post anymore. I'm just too tired. My second reaction is that it still doesn't answer the question - "How could a lovinjg God allow this too happen?" I mean, seriously - if this is the work of the people who bear God's name why hasn't he stepped in and done something to make us grasp his vision, to make us understand the consequences of not caring for one another, of not living justly?
Unless, of course, the current economic meltdown is just that...

We've just had three deaths all due to lifestyle. I sometimes think we're doing too much of the wrong things and not enough of the right things. We give out crack pipes and needles in some kind of morphed form of harm reduction, and what are we really doing? We're handing them the guns with which to shoot themselves.
The story of Evelyn is sad, and there are too many stories just like hers. I think it's got "everything" to do with us, and not really anything to do with God.
Suse - Our community is trying to deal with yet another death right now, a well known guy who was found in a local creek. I don't get the thing about handing out needles and crack pipes either. There has to be a better way.
